The Daily Readings component displays the day's liturgical information on your website: the feast or commemoration, the scripture readings, the saints of the day and their lives, and the fasting guidance. It can draw all of this from a single built-in source, so your readings are complete and self-contained without depending on an outside website.
Adding a Daily Readings Section
- Navigate to the page where you want the readings to appear.
- Click Add Section and choose Components - Daily Readings.
- In the Source menu, choose your source (see below).
- Turn on the pieces you want to show and set your display options.
- Click Save.
The Built-In Source
The recommended source is Orthocal (self-hosted): Readings, Saints, Fasting. It is served from your own site, provides the full daily liturgical data, and powers the built-in Readings page and the Today page. Choose it in the Source menu, then use the switches to decide what appears:
- Feast / Day Title - the name of the day or feast.
- Fasting - the day's fasting guidance, shown with a familiar icon (described below).
- Scripture - the appointed scripture readings.
- Saints - the saints and commemorations of the day.
- Saint Lives - fuller accounts of the saints' lives, shown when they are available from the source.
- Titles - the section headings above each part, which you can customize.
Fasting Icons
When Fasting is turned on, each day shows a small icon summarizing the fasting rule: a cross for a strict fast day, grapes when wine and oil are allowed, a fish when fish, wine, and oil are allowed, and cheese during the dairy-allowed (Cheesefare) fast. Fast-free and ordinary days show no icon. To manage how fasting is defined and displayed elsewhere on your site, see Managing Fasting.
Bible Translation
The Translation menu chooses which English Bible the scripture readings use: the World English Bible (default) or the King James Version. Both are in the public domain. Choose whichever your parish prefers; the setting applies to that section.
Display Mode
The Display menu controls how much is shown at once:
- Full - everything is displayed on the page at once.
- Expandable - a shorter view where visitors tap to open the readings and saints' lives as they wish.
- Compact - a brief summary that links through to the full readings, designed for the Today page.
Custom Headings
When Titles is turned on, you can replace the default headings with your own wording: Title for Feast (defaults to Today), Title for Scripture (defaults to Today's Scripture Readings), and Title for Saints (defaults to Today's Saints).
Old and New Calendar
The readings and commemorations automatically follow your parish's calendar setting: Old Calendar parishes see the Julian reckoning and New Calendar parishes see the Gregorian. There is no separate calendar option to set on the section itself.
Other Sources
For continuity, the component still offers the jurisdiction feeds used in earlier versions, which draw from outside websites and each offer their own switches for what to show:
- Orthodox Church in America: Scripture, Saints, Icons
- Moscow Patriarchate: Scripture, Saints, Troparia
- Greek Orthodox Archdiocese: Scripture, Saints, Icon
- Serbian Orthodox Church: The Prologue of Ochrid
- Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese
These remain available for parishes that prefer a particular jurisdiction's presentation, but the built-in source is recommended for most sites because it is complete, self-hosted, and works with the Readings and Today pages.
The Readings Page
Your site includes a built-in readings page at /readings/. It shows the current day's full readings and commemorations and includes a date selector: visitors can tap the date to open their device's date picker and look up the readings for any day of the year, and move to the previous or next day. Old Calendar readings are available at /readings/julian/. This page is a convenient address to share or link from a bulletin, and it is one of the pieces gathered on the Today page.
