Managing Fasting

Fasting information displayed in the Monthly Calendar is generated automatically based on the liturgical calendar and feast settings. However, you may control how fasting appears and, if needed, override it for specific days.

This article explains:

  1. Global fasting display settings

  2. Editing fasting for a specific day

  3. Adjusting fasting rules for a feast

  4. How color settings interact with fasting

1. Global Fasting Display Settings

To control how fasting appears across your entire calendar:

  1. Log into Site Manager

  2. Go to Components → Monthly Calendar

  3. Click Calendar Properties

  4. Scroll to the Fasting section

You will see two primary options.

Fasting Color Display

  • Use colored boxes

  • Do not use colored boxes

If enabled, fasting days will display using the background and badge colors configured in Calendar Colors.

If disabled, fasting colors will not appear, even if they are configured.

Fasting Text Display

Choose how fasting text appears:

  • Show full fasting details
Example: “Strict Fast” or “Fast: wine & oil”

  • Show just “Fast” on fasting days

  • Hide all fasting information

  • Hide all fasting information during the Paschal season

Click Save Changes when finished.

2. Editing Fasting for a Specific Day

If you need to override fasting information for a particular date:

  1. Go to Components → Monthly Calendar

  2. Click on the specific day

  3. In the Day Edit window, locate the Fasting field

  4. Modify the text as needed

  5. Click Save Changes

This creates a manual override for that date.

If you later wish to return to the standard liturgical calculation, click Restore Default.

Important: Manual day edits override the automatic fasting calculation.

3. Adjusting Fasting Rules for a Feast

Many fasting designations are controlled by feast settings.

To modify a feast’s fasting rule:

  1. Go to Components → Monthly Calendar

  2. Click Manage Feasts

  3. Select the feast you wish to edit

  4. Locate the Fast dropdown:

    • Never

    • Sometimes

    • Always

If applicable, adjust the Rules dropdown:

  • Fast free

  • Fast: dairy, fish, wine, & oil

  • Fast: fish, wine, & oil

  • Fast: wine & oil

  • Fast: wine

  • Fast

  • Strict fast

Click Save Changes.

These settings determine how fasting appears when that feast occurs.

4. Customizing Fasting Colors

Fasting colors are configured separately.

To edit fasting colors:

  1. Go to Components → Monthly Calendar

  2. Click Calendar Colors

You may customize:

Background Colors

  • Fasting Day

  • Strict Fast Day

  • Fast Free Day

  • Meat-fare Day

  • Bright Week

  • Paschal Season

Badge Colors

  • Fasting Day

  • Strict Fast Day

  • Fast Free Day

  • Meat-fare Day

  • Bright Week

  • Paschal Season

Note: Colors will only display if Use colored boxes is enabled in Calendar Properties.

How Fasting Is Determined

Fasting display follows this order of priority:

  1. Manual day override (highest priority)

  2. Feast fasting rule

  3. Default liturgical calculation (system-generated)

If fasting appears differently than expected, check:

  • Whether the day has been manually edited

  • Whether a feast rule applies

  • Your global fasting display settings
